Stealing the Crown Jewel Colornel Thomas Blood lived in England in the 17th century. He was a very clever thief. In fact,by the middle of the century, he had become one of the most wanted men in the country. Colonel Blood decided to steal the Crown Jewels after visiting the Tower of London in 1671. At that time, the Jewels were kept in a locked room in the basement of the Tower.Only one man, a guard named Talbot Edwards, had the key to the room, and it was his duty to show visitors in and out. After looking at the Jewels for several minutes, Colonel Blood thanked Mr Edwards, and said that he would come again soon.'I’II bring my wife next time,' he said. 'I’m sure she will love the Jewels.' Over the next few months, Colonel Blood and his wife visited the Jewels regularly. On each visit, they talked to Mr Edwards, and were soon introduced to his wife and daughter. Talbot Edwards said that his daughter was looking for a husband.'I have a handsome, wealthy nephew,' Colonel Blood told Mr Edwards. 'I’m sure he will like your pretty daughter. I will bring him to see you.' On the morning of May 9th 1671, Colonel Blood called on Talbot Edwards with two friends and a young man who was pretending to be his nephew. While the 'nephew' talked to Mrs and Miss Edwards, Colonel Blood asked Mr Edwards if his friends could see the Crown Jewels. As soon as the four men were inside the room where the Jewels were kept, Colonel Blood hit Mr Edwards over the head with a mallet, and tied him up. He and his friends then stole the Jewels, and started to run from the tower. They nearly escaped, but were finally captured by a group of watchmen. Colonel Blood was sent to jail. He did not, however, stay there long. When the King asked him about the robbery, he was so charming that the King just laughed at his story and pardoned him. The Man Behind the Mask Jim Carrey is today one of the most well-known faces in the world of cinema. Indeed, it is mainly because of his face that he has become so famous. Carrey has a very rubbery face which he can twist into all sorts of weird positions, to complement his crazy behaviour on film. Carrey is also one of the funniest men working in movies today. Hollywood Now recently caught up with Carrey and the actor gave us a rare interview: HN: So Jim, can you tell us about your childhood? JC: I was born in a little place called New Market in Ontario, Canada on January 17th 1962. My family was working class, and poor, so we never had too much money. Then when I was a teenager my father lost his job, so I had to take a job as a janitor. After a while I couldn't carry on with both school and the job so I dropped out of school. HN: How did you feel at that time? JC:I was very angry and that's probably why I began to develop my sense of humour -- it was a way of protecting myself from a cruel world. I didn't have any friends because I didn't want any. HN: When did your career in comedy start? JC:I was 15 when I started performing at Yuk Yuks, a famous Toronto comedy club. People liked my act so I moved to Los Angeles and went on tour with Rodney Dangerfield who taught me how to get the most laughs out of an audience. HN: So what was your big break? JC:I suppose it was back in 1990 when I was the only white guy in a black American late night TV show called in living color. The show wasn’t great but it brought my name to the attention of some film directors here in Hollywood. HN: Tell us about your early films. JC:In 1994 1 starred in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective where I had to act with lots of furry creatures. Then my next film was The Mask and this crazy mix of reality and fantasy made people laugh and take notice of me. I loved taking on this role. HN: What has been your most satisfying cinema experience so far? JC: Probably my part in The Truman Show was my most challenging and showed people that l wasn't just a rubber face. I won a Golden Globe Award for acting this part. HN: You are still busy with new projects. What's next for Jim Carrey? JC:I'll continue to play both funny and straight roles in films. I would like to win an Oscar for my work and, most importantly, I'd like to earn $20 million for each film I make! 1.Jim Carrey ... a) is a famous American actor. b) became famous in 1989 c) is one of the funniest men in films today d) no longer wants to act in films.
